Master Control

I’ve not been lucky enough to experience Mexican parties first hand, but everyone says they’re good so let’s go with that. Master Control is best thought of as a weapon of mass dancefloor destruction – while there’s not too much going on in the clever-box, it’s furious music that’s purely geared to make a central American dancefloor move. Aerobic is tight, fluid stuff all the way along. Formulaic, sure, but it’s epic fullon with a tasty depth going through it. It builds solidly up to the break, where it collapses into itself in a comedy ketamine-binge way, before dropping into a euphoric run with lots of top and midranges giving it focus. Neovibration is strong again, the stench of rocketfuel all over the place and energy literally sparking off it. Fullpowaaaa, but you can’t fault its energy. Hi Thinking has an enormous peak that’s undeniably cheesy, but undeniably effective. You can see the dust that would be kicked up when it drops. It’s insanely silly though, but then I think that’s sort of the idea – the Mexican mescalito thing, and all that. The album’s title track is the same. Reborn and Chemical Disorder are stronger. The cheesy moments are largely spared, and everything just works best here. The power is a lot like early GMS, or Gataka… exceptionally strong and ballsy fullon. Chemical Disorder has possibly the cheesiest sample of the moment, a chick saying “have a taste of this…” in a silent gap right before the drop…. Should hate it, but I like it. Loudness is competent but has a little too much going on at the topend, and as a track it’s not as cohesive as some of the others on offer on the album. And finally, Teletranceporter does more or less what it says on the tin, it’s pedal-to-the-metal fullon with much the same twists and tricks as we’ve seen elsewhere. There’s not much of an artist-fingerprint here to make Lamat stand out; the power sort of reminds me of Gataka, and there’s lots of random fullon influences here – so I can understand how some people will dismiss this as generic. It’s like good porn: it’s not going to win any Oscars, but it’s good at getting you off. Refreshingly, however, most of the power comes from the midrange so the reliance on topend tinkles is less dense than with other current artists. Lamat has what I believe is referred to as mas cojones.
