Freaks in a Frenzy Various Artists Procyon Records

The number of quality debut releases continues with this the 1st release from Procyon Records based in Budapest and Paris. Compiled by Roopak and Danger, this is furious night time head messing music of the very highest psychedelic quality, featuring artists from France, South Africa, Sweden, Israel, USA and Australia. The CD opens up with a deep atmospheric track from ‘Virtuart’, called ‘Kalki’. This has some nice hi-hats and cool dripping acidic sounds that  break down with an old school style melody about half way through and which drives the track to its logical conclusion. ‘Shift’ deliver ‘Optical Delusion’, which follows on nicely from the previous track, continuing the journey with some nice squelchy sounds and more atmospheric melodies. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any harder, ‘Stralia’ up the ante with a thundering piece of psy, ‘Transducer’, which has some clubby sounding hi-hats over that ‘doof doof’ beat. You can really lose yourself in this tune with its highly charged acid wig outs. Pure night time madness to get you bouncing of the walls. If you’re still only bouncing of the walls, then ‘Psyside’ will make sure you’re plastered all over the ceiling. ‘True Power’ by name and ‘True Power’ by nature, this track is in the typical ‘Psyside’ style and delivers some hard pounding bass drums over a psychotic melody with added naughtiness. ‘Sienis’ slow the tempo slightly with ‘Snakes ‘n’ Sparklers’ giving you some deep dark sounding melodic madness and swirling synths over some insane voice samples. ‘Party Time’ from French stalwart, ‘Nomad’ is a funky little number with more of a morning feel, but retaining those night time noises. Typical 3D Vision style power trance. Quality stuff. ‘Mr. Peculiar’ delivers a psychedelcious slab of yet more funky full on mayhem from down under with a tune called ‘Prophecy’. It reminds me of a cross of SpaceTribe and Logic Bomb. Insanely trippy. If you like the current full on Israeli sounds, then you’re going to love ‘Atomic Pulse’, who present to us a full ‘360 Degrees’ workout with nice Israeli melodies and a generous slice of funkiness for good measure. The last track is a collaboration between Fred Neuromotor and Jean Luc from Psyside. Named as ‘Mastermind’, this duo unleash ‘Excalibur’ on to the unsuspecting psy fans. With samples from the movie of the same name, it starts off with an almost progressive feel and then gives away to wibbly full on sounds perfect for that time when the night starts to fade and the first rays of the morning sun begin to creep up on you. A strong debut from Procyon records with plenty of melodies. A quality album that takes you on a journey. So, Fasten up your seat belts and your straight jackets, and get ready for a frenzied assault on your psyche.
