Morphem Ambrosia Remixes ZMA (Greece)

Not really an album, but with five different mixes it’s not a single either. Maybe a doublepack single; or maybe an EP… anyway while we debate this until it gets violent, the music here’s sweet. The Am Synaptic Edit from Volker Koenig (aka Ololiuqui) is effortless, sheer class in a glass – very smooth production and sonic manipulation drive it along, with increasingly psychedelic elements splattered around the top. Sweet but at just over five minutes it ends rather abruptly – the stage was set to do something pretty wonderful, and there’s nothing more disappointing on this planet than an opportunity missed. Still, Prisoners Of The Sun offer up their mix, with an uber-melody at its centre. Once they shake it, the tune moves nicely with some very nice touches over the top… it’s nice and it made the sun come out as I was playing it, but it’s missing some final ingredient somewhere along the line. Son Kite’s mix is sheer class as you’d expect – perfect layering, subtle movement and crystal clear production. A false ending, a cheeky breakdown with huge synth belches that beg to be turned up… It’s wonderful – Son Kite at their best, genuinely transporting and uplifting. Bitcrusher’s mix is chunkier, with a metallic sound and a semi-quantised groove. It moves nicely and has nice touches, a well-balanced sound and a very fluid feel, though like Am Synaptik’s, the mix is a little shorter than it could have been. Finally Midimiliz turn in a characteristically dirty, techno-flavoured mix with plenty to shock, scare and amaze with its clattering groove and dark atmospherics. All in all a nice little release, whether we decided it’s a single, album, EP or whatever; though Son Kite’s mix is the only really essential winner here.
