God Is Love - Hom-Mega

BLT is the superhero trance alter-ego of Yuli Fershtat, who trivia monkeys may like to know is currently studying his final year in Chinese Medicine. Fancy that. Also interestingly, though whether this is a first I don’t know, but a vinyl release is being taken care of by Iboga Records in Denmark – particularly nice to see as the vinyl trance posse have been cut off from a fair few vital releases lately. The album itself is nowhere near the “Trancers for Jesus” vibe that its title may suggest, and more like a melting pot of various psychedelic brews all underpinned by BLT’s easy going, tight vibe. Monolith is very stripped down, with a desolate vibe like a ghost town – eerie stuff going on here. Global Spirit, featuring rising star Cosma, is subtle and rather low-key but tight with resolutely good progression throughout, and The Calling has likeable sounds and nice atmospheric high ends over a restrained lower section. Neither really goes through the roof but this is good stuff for early on in a set as they hold the attention well and sit neatly in the mix. Title track God Is Love is a desolate breakbeat number, almost dubby with the emphasis on space between the sounds and a bladerunner, future-fear vibe. She’s My Baby has a quirky bassline creating a shrug-of-the-shoulders type of vibe, and features pixel-perfect percussion raising the intensity neatly, while Nonsense features some sweet acid tweaks falling over a no-nonsense (ahem) rhythm section before tight and effective synth runs raise the temperature. BLT’s remix of Psycraft’s massive Bizarre is a delight, keeping the bluesy guitar of the original and dragging it through a hedge of noisy beats, distorted signature melodies and ever-increasing tension. Back To Basics does exactly what it says on the tin, taking a simple desolate melody and developing the underbelly into a cute morning tune. Tucked away about four minutes after the end of that however, is a wonderfully sweet and unique laid back tune, no idea of the name but it’s perfect, always on the right side of the cheesy line and with very cute melodies over ambling breaks. Drop this at the right time and they’ll all be in tears, while a hundred thousand cute chicks beg for your number. I guarantee it. All in all this is a pretty good release, well-rounded and with something to offer everyone.
