This is the "first essential Freestyle compilation" according to the blurb, but judging from the quality of the music on offer, Id not be surprised if it was also the last. Freestyle mixes on the more recent Re:Evolution sets have become increasingly dull, ploddy affairs, sacrificing their characteristic smooth dubby brilliance in favour of one-foot-in-1997 trip hop jaunts and cliched headnodder chill. And one really has to wonder about the music on offer here its not engaging, theres nothing transporting about it, and nothing that gets a jaw even partially dropped in the whole seventy-something minutes. Stalwart Freestyle saviours Red Seal offer just about the only ray of sunshine with These Are The Days, a glistening bit of twenty first century dub. Now its not that were not open minded, or not used to this music and we spun it twice, once in the afternoon (in the sun) and once in the evening (stoned). The problem here is that whether your chillout needs are psychedelic or post-triphop grooves, theres much better stuff out there than this.
