Singularity 2002 - Flying Rhino

Flying Rhino bring us another instalment in their Singularity series. Featuring about half previously unreleased tracks and half tracks released on artist albums and vinyl, the 2002 edition of Singularity brings us more of the darker sound of Flying Rhino. While still sounding progressive, the Flying Rhino label is certainly beginning to venture deeper back into the psychedelic sound. The compilation opens with Son Kite's Pre-fi-ation, in it's debut full-length CD release, which is a nice funky track in the usual crisp Son Kite style. It's followed by Massimo Kinetico Vivonna's Fly from his Atmosphere full length, which for me is easily the weakest track on the compilation - it's clubby, cheesy, and contains the most appalling vocal hook I've heard since I last fled from a house party. The next six tracks more than make up for that, however. They are all good dark night tracks in the true Flying Rhino style. I was especially impressed by Great Leap Forward [a fellow Sydney-sider]'s Old Money. The compilation is rounded off by a light progressive morning tune from the ManMadeMan duo, whose next album I'm eagerly awaiting. This release is well worth a listen if you like the dark progressive psychedelic sound. -Tom- 4
