Chillosophy 2 - Digital Structures
Various Artists
Last year's Chillosophy album got many a well-deserved pat on the back for being a consistent and intelligent chillout compilation. And this one knocks the spots off it. Seb from Son Kite & Ooze has selected twelve classy chillout numbers based on merit of production, emotion, and the plain ol' effect that they have on you. Omnimotion's Omnidub is instantly very emotional, just makes you sit up and take notice right away (something a lot of chilled albums could do with). Dab Screen's Oversleep is also very pretty, and has a nice transporting effect, and Interchill's Legion of Green Men make a classy stab at things with Ambrosia, another piece of full-on cinematic soundscape business. Three Point Turn's Miles is (as the name suggests) a sort of miles davis meets dj shadow affair, and Ticon's On The Rocks is laid-back, westside LA cop show music... sweeeet. Stress Assassin's Roof Meet is a spooky, Mad Professor-tinged bit of downbeat dub that would fit nicely on the old Planet Dog compilations, and Fingertwister follows suit perfectly with Reluctant Believer, a piece of dub that's like watching a puppet show. Aztech's Exploding Fist is industrial post-apocalyptic Portishead, and with the blissed out picnic funk of Patios Sopa Bunk Bed and Vibraspheres dubby comedown The Big Sleep closing proceedings this is one of the best. Most imaginative, and tickly-pleasurable downtempo albums in a long time. 5
