Yahel

You may remember a couple of weeks ago, Yahel’s Private Collection EP was reviewed here and got quite a lukewarm reception – cos we knew he was capable of so much more, and were waiting for the album. And here it is, and it’s delightful. Yahel bridges the gap between full on psy and club trance, in a hybrid that doesn’t always pay off, but when it does it’s blistering. Electro Panic starts unassuming enough, then using a new wave-ish vocal loop it really picks up the pace before dropping into a dirty hardhousey breakdown and accelerating into the peak time sunset. Avalanche is gorgeous, bringing in the full flavour of classic Israeli twist. It moves in a similar way to Private Taste’s First, with soaring melodies all over the place. Step by Step shows that Yahel can make good the organic outdoor sound, and on Scratch he again raises the intensity and goes full-on melodic. Heart Ache and Crystal Blue combine the goa elements with some nice melodies to give reflective morning-ish tunes, and it’s all rather nice. There will be some who will just see this as crossover music – but that’s missing the point. Through taking the best elements of psychedelic, club, melodic trance he creates a unique blend of very listenable, danceable, quality music that will appeal to pretty much everybody.
