Fünf D

Every so often, an ablum comes along that blows you away. And this, ladies and germs, is one of them. Fünf D’s second solo album is the most delightful soup of postmodern trance in a long time. Opening track It’s Five D-A is a semi-dubby cinematic scenesetter, kind of a more digital shpongle, with a sudden shift into a very desolate techno tinged futurescope. It’s totally different, you really have to hear it – kind of like a more psychedelic future sound of london. It just leaves you hanging there waiting for what’s next, so when the dreamily mechanic It’s Five D-B pops up, the effect is wonderful. It’s a minimal tune but more than that, it’s twisted minimal and the gaps in the sounds are kinda disturbing. It’s Hot starts with just drum n’ drone until Fünf D brings in a cute set of melodies which he moulds into a moving morning tune. Am Hang is slomo acid techno, making excellent use of his faithful 303 and adding spacey drones to wicked effect. Mushed features another very happy 303 dancing cheekily around the rhythm section, and as he gently sets things down with 2002 Lounge and Neuartig, you’re left trying to put words to the experience you’ve just had. Those who’ve never liked the German minimal sound will be converted – trust me. Truly unique, you have to check this one out.
